Atlanta artist Steve Penley were built with a message for that city Friday, so he required to his paints and brushes to best express themself. In black paint, Penley authored: “Atlanta is extremely lucky to possess a great mayor and Ga. includes a great Gov. Obtain a grip everybody. It’s weather!” He published it on his artist Facebook page. Why did Penley want to deal with the continuing critique of Georgia governor Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed? To begin with, Penley’s work continues to be unintentionally ridiculed all week.
The thing is, his original painting of Reed – the main one given to Hizzoner at Tuesday’s Georgia Trend magazine Georgian of the season award presentation in the downtown Ritz-Carlton – photobombed the award picture with Deal, Reed and Georgia Trend writer Neely Youthful. This is actually the same photo that Deal’s folks published on his Twitter account Tuesday because the flakes started flying around town. That now infamous tweet has circulated all week in the news and across social networking. It’s been largely accustomed to condemn the elected officials to be from touch, posing for grip-n-grins within the basement ballroom of the luxury downtown hotel as traffic gridlocked throughout them. The photo and painting even made Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart during Thursday night’s scathingly funny set of our weather problem.
Penley has colored numerous politicians and business leaders through the years for that state’s business monthly magazine, such as the original work employed for Reed’s 2014 Georgian of the season The month of january cover. Reed was handed the painting at Tuesday’s lunch.
Penley’s Facebook note towards the city generated 380 “likes” from his 7,918 Facebook fans but additionally some critique. “Stick to painting,” advised Thomas Allen Porter. Added Allen Taylor Waldrop: “You apparently weren’t stuck inside it for twenty-four hrs like some! It had been a tragedy and embarrassment! You’ve sniffed an excessive amount of paint Steve.” Recommended follower Nan Weekley Konze: “I think you need to sign it and send it towards the Weather Funnel.”
Through the years, Penley has colored everybody from Taxation and George Washington to Winston Churchill and MLK. In the artist bio, the 49-year-old artist, who had been elevated in Athens and Macon, explains why he enjoys painting historic individuals. It could also best explain his motivation behind Friday’s Facebook message to fans: “In today’s world, there exists a inclination toward deconstruction. Today’s heroes appear small , minor in contrast to individuals of history. There’s no doubt that lots of icons in our culture are under perfect. But there are many other outlets in art and culture to reveal their real or imagined weaknesses. I’d rather look for the perfect during these subjects and when possible, provide them with a brand new dignity.”
Thankfully, the roads are obvious today. If he’s likely to use a fresh coat of dignity to manage and Reed’s weathered images, Penley will need lots of paint.
